సుందరకాండ – 36
వెంటనే హనుమ తోకకి ఉన్న అగ్ని వెన్నముద్దలా చల్లగా అయిపోయింది. అప్పుడాయన అనుకున్నాడు ‘అవునులే నేను వస్తుంటే మైనాకుడు నాకు ఆతిధ్యం ఇచ్చాడు. సముద్రుడు నమస్కారం చేశాడు. రాముడి పేరు, సీతమ్మ పేరు చెబితే ప్రకృతిలో ఉపకరించనిది ఏముంటుంది? నా తండ్రి వాయుదేవుడికి అగ్నిదేవుడు స్నేహితుడు. అందుకని నాకు ఇలా ఉపకారం చేస్తున్నాడు’ అని అనుకుని, ‘ఈ లంకా పట్టణాన్ని కాల్చి అగ్నిదేవుడికి సంతర్పణ చేసి వెళ్ళిపోతాను’ అనుకొని, మొదట ప్రహస్తుడి ఇంట్లో నిప్పు పెట్టాడు. అలా అన్ని ఇళ్ళ మీదకి దూకుతూ నిప్పు పెడుతూ వెళ్ళిపోయాడు. రావణుడి ప్రవర్తన వల్ల ఇంతకాలం కడుపుమండిపోయి ఉన్న దిక్పాలకులు అవకాశం దొరికిందని ఆనందపడ్డారు. హనుమ అలా నిప్పు పెట్టగానే అగ్ని దేవుడు కాల్చేస్తున్నాడు. వాయుదేవుడు వేగంగా వీచి అగ్నిని పట్టుకెళ్ళి అన్ని ఇళ్ళమీద వేసేశాడు. కొన్ని చోట్ల ఆకుపచ్చగా, కొన్ని చోట్ల పచ్చగా, కొన్ని చోట్ల ఎర్రగా ఆ లంక అంతా కాలిపోతోంది. ఆ లంకలో అందరూ “హా తాత, హా పుత్ర, హా తల్లి” అని అరుచుకుంటూ దిక్కులు పట్టి పరుగులు తీశారు. అప్పుడు హనుమంతుడు సంతోషంగా వెళ్ళి త్రికూటాచల పర్వతం మీద నిలబడి చూసేసరికి, ఎదురుగా లంక లంకంతా కాలిపోతూ కనిపించింది.
అప్పుడాయన “అరరే ఎంతపని చేశాను! అగ్నిని తీసుకెళ్ళి నీళ్ళల్లో పడేసినట్టు కోపాన్ని విడిచిపెట్టినవాడు ధన్యుడు. పాము కుబుసాన్ని విడిచినట్టు కోపాన్ని విడిచిపెట్టడం మానేసి లంకని కాల్చేశాను. ఈ లంకలో సీతమ్మ కూడా కాలిపోయి ఉంటుంది. ఏ సీతమ్మ తేజస్సు చేత నా తోకని అగ్ని కాల్చలేదో, అటువంటి సీతమ్మని అగ్ని కాలుస్తుందా? సీతమ్మే అగ్ని. అగ్నిని అగ్ని కాలుస్తుందా?” అని అనుకున్నాడు.
ఇంతలో అటుగా వెళుతున్న చారణులు (భూమికి దగ్గరగా ఆకాశంలో ఎగురుతూ శుభవార్తలు చెప్పే దేవ గాయకులు) “ఏమీ ఆశ్చర్యం, ఇవ్వాళ ఒక వానరుడైన హనుమ 100 యోజనముల సముద్రాన్ని దాటి లంకా పట్టణాన్ని అగ్నికి ఆహుతి చేశాడు. ఆ లంక అంతా కాలిపోతోంది. కానీ శింశుపా వృక్షము, ఆ వృక్షము కింద కూర్చున్న సీతమ్మకి ఎటువంటి అపకారము జరుగలేదు. అలాగే విభీషణుడి ఇల్లుకి కూడా ఏమీ జరుగలేదు” అన్నారు. అదివిన్న హనుమ గొప్ప సాంత్వనం పొందాడు.
అప్పుడు హనుమంతుడు శింశుపా వృక్షం క్రిందన కూర్చున్న సీతమ్మ దగ్గరికి వచ్చి “అమ్మా లంకంతా కాల్చేశాను. రావణుడికి చెప్పవలసిన మాట చెప్పేశాను. నువ్వేమి బెంగపెట్టుకోకు. వాడు ఇప్పటికే భయంతో సగం చచ్చిపోయాడు. రాముడి కోసం వాడిని వదిలేశాను. లేకపోతే వాడి పది తలకాయలు చిదిమేసి ఉండేవాడిని. అమ్మా! నేను బయలుదేరతాను. తొందరలోనే నీకు పట్టాభిషేకం జరుగుతుంది. శోకమునకు గురికాకు” అని సీతమ్మతో చెప్పి ఒక్క దూకు దూకి ఆకాశంలోకి ఎగిరి నల్లటి వనాలతో, ఎర్రటి మచ్చలు కలిగిన ఏనుగులతో ఉన్న అరిష్టం అనే పర్వతం మీద దిగి, అక్కడినుంచి బయలుదేరాడు. హనుమ ఆ పర్వతం మీద నుంచి ఎగిరేసరికి అది భూమిలోకి నొక్కుకుపోయింది.

Immediately, the fire on Hanuman’s tail became as cold as a lump of butter. Then He thought, “Yes, when I was coming, the Mainaka mountain extended its hospitality. The ocean greeted me. If Rama and Seeta’s names are uttered, what would be there in nature, that would not help? Agni, the fire God, is my father Vayu Deva’s friend. Hence he is helping me thus.” He further thought, “I shall burn down this Lanka and offer it to Agni Deva before I leave, and first set fire to the house of Prahasta. Then he jumped on to all the houses, setting them all on fire. Ravana’s guards, who had all along had heart burn due to Ravana’s behaviour, were very happy. As soon as Hanuman set fire, Agni Deva started burning everything down. Vayu Deva blew strongly and spread the fire to all the houses. The entire Lanka town was getting burnt – leaf green at some places, green and red at others. Everyone in that town was shouting ‘O grandpa! O son! Ha mother!’ and running in all directions. Then Hanuman happily went and stood on the Trikootaachala mountain and saw the entire Lanka burning down.
Then He thought, “Oh, what have I done! Blessed is the one who casts away his anger like drowning the fire in water. Instead of giving up my anger like the snake which casts off its skin, I burnt down the entire Lanka. Mother Seeta would also have got burnt in this Lanka! That Seeta, due to whose splendour my tail was not burnt by the fire, will the fire ever burn Her? Mother Seeta Herself is Agni (fire). Can fire burn fire?”
Meanwhile, the Chaaranas (singers of the gods flying in the sky close to the earth and telling good news) who were flying by, said, “What a wonder, Hanuman, an ape, crossed the sea 100 yojanas wide, and set fire to the city of Lanka. The whole of Lanka is on fire. However, nothing happened to the Shimshupa tree and Mother Seeta sitting under it. Vibhishana’s house was also spared. ” Hearing this, Hanuman was greatly comforted.
Then Hanuman came to Mother Seeta, who was sitting under the Shimshupa tree and said “Mother, I burnt down the entire Lanka town. I have told Ravana what was to be told. Do not worry. He is already half dead with fear. I left him for Lord Rama. Else I would have removed his ten heads. Mother, I take leave now. You shall be coronated very soon. Do not grieve,” and leaping into the sky with one jump, descended on a mountain called Arishtam, with its black forests and red-spotted elephants, and started from there. As Hanuman sprung up from the mountain, it got pressed down into the earth.

ఆకాశంలోని మేఘాల్ని తాగుతున్నాడా అన్నట్టుగా ఎగురుకుంటూ వెళ్ళి ఉత్తర దిక్కున హనుమ కోసం ఎదురు చూస్తున్న వానరముల దగ్గరికి చేరుకోగానే ఒక పెద్ద నాదం చేశాడు. అక్కడున్న వానరాలు ‘ఆకాశం బద్దలయ్యిందా’ అనుకున్నారు. అప్పుడు వాళ్ళందరూ జాంబవంతుడి దగ్గరికి వచ్చి “తాత, అంత పెద్ద అరుపు వినిపిస్తోంది. అది హనుమదేనా?” అన్నారు.
జాంబవంతుడు అన్నాడు “అది ఖచ్చితంగా హనుమ నాదమే. హనుమకి ఒక కార్యం చెబితే అవ్వకపోవడం అన్నది ఉండదు. తాను వెళ్ళిన పని అయ్యింది కాబట్టే ఇంత పెద్ద మహానాదం చేశాడు” అన్నాడు.
హనుమని అంత దూరంలో చూడగానే వానరులంతా పరుగులు తీశారు. హనుమంతుడు “చూశాను సీతమ్మను” అని ఒక పెద్ద కేక వేసి మహేంద్రగిరి పర్వతం మీద దిగారు. జాంబవంతుడు, అంగదుడు, గంధమాదనుడు మొదలైనవారు తప్ప మిగిలిన వానరములన్నీ తమ తోకల్ని కర్రలలా నిలువుగా పెట్టి, ఆ తోకల్ని చేతులతో పట్టుకుని హనుమ దిగిన కొండ ఎక్కి, ఆయనని ముట్టుకొని పారిపోతున్నారు. హనుమంతుడు అక్కడి గుహలో సభచేసి ఉన్న అంగదుడు మొదలైన వారికి తన ప్రయాణం గురించి చెప్పాడు. “నిజంగా ఆ రావణుడికి ఎంత తపఃశక్తి ఉందో, సీతమ్మని ముట్టుకుని కూడా వాడు బూడిద కాలేదు. కానీ సీతమ్మ పాతివ్రత్యం చేత రావణుడు ఎప్పుడో మరణించాడు. రాముడు నిమిత్తంగా వెళ్ళి బాణం వేసి చంపడమే మిగిలి ఉంది” అన్నాడు. అంగదుడు “అంతా తెలిసిపోయింది కదా! ఇంక రాముడికి చెప్పడం ఎందుకు? ఇలాగే వెళ్ళి ఆ రావణుడిని సంహరించి, సీతమ్మని తీసుకొచ్చి రాముడికి ఇచ్చేద్దాము” అన్నాడు. జాంబవంతుడు “తప్పు. అలా చెయ్యకూడదు. పెద్దలు చెప్పినట్టు చెయ్యాలి తప్ప స్వతంత్రంగా ఏమీ చెయ్యకూడదు. ఈ విషయాలని రాముడికి చెప్పి రాముడు ఎలా చెబితే అలా చేద్దాము” అన్నాడు.
అప్పుడు వాళ్ళందరూ ముందుకి బయలుదేరారు. అలా వారు వెళుతుండగా వాళ్ళకి మధువనం కనపడింది. ఆ మధువనాన్ని దధిముఖుడనే వానరుడు రక్షిస్తూ ఉంటాడు. ఆ మధువనంలోని చెట్ల నిండా తేనె పట్లు ఉన్నాయి. అక్కడంతా పువ్వుల నుండి తీసిన మధువు, పళ్ళనుండి తీసిన మధువు, రకరకాలైన మధువు పాత్రలలో పెట్టి ఉంది. ఆ వానరములన్నీ అంగదుడి దగ్గరికి వెళ్ళి “ఆ మధువనంలోని మధువుని తాగుదాము” అన్నారు. అంగదుడు సరే అనేసరికి అందరూ లోపలికి వెళ్ళి తెనేపట్లు పిండేసుకుని తేనె తాగేశారు. అక్కడున్న పాత్రలలోని మధువు తాగేశారు. అక్కడున్న చెట్లకి ఉన్న పళ్ళని తినేశారు. వారందరూ విపరీతంగా తేనె తాగడం వలన మత్తెక్కి, కొంతమంది చెట్లకింద కూర్చుని పాటలు పాడడం మొదలుపెట్టారు. పాటలు పాడుతున్నవారి వీపు మీద కొంతమంది గుద్దుతున్నారు. కొంతమంది నాట్యాలు చేస్తున్నారు. కొంతమంది కనపడ్డవారికి నమస్కారం చేసుకుంటూ వెళుతున్నారు. కొంతమంది పళ్ళు బయట పెట్టి నవ్వుతున్నారు. కొంతమంది అటూ ఇటూ నడుస్తున్నారు. కొంతమంది చెట్ల మీద నుంచి కింద పడిపోతున్నారు. కొంతమంది నిష్కారణంగా ఏడుస్తున్నారు.
Sundarakanda – 37
Hanuman flew to the north, as if drinking the clouds of the sky and made a loud noise as he approached the monkeys waiting for Him. The monkeys there thought ‘has the sky broken?’. Then they all came to Jaambavantha and said, “Grandfather, such a loud shout is heard. Is it from Hanuman?”
Jaambavantha said, “It is definitely Hanuman’s sound. If Hanuman is given a work, there is nothing like ‘it is not possible’. He made such a big noise only because he has completed the work he went for.”
Seeing Hanuman from a distance, all the monkeys ran towards Him. Hanuman shouted , “I saw Mother Seeta” and descended on the Mahendragiri mountain. All the other monkeys, except Jaambavantha, Angada, Gandhamaadana etc. lifted their tails up like sticks, grabbed them with their hands and climbed the hill where Hanuman landed, touching Him and fleeing. Hanuman called a meeting in a cave there and told Angada and others about his journey. He said, “Truly, Ravana has so much spiritual power (from penance) that he did not get burnt to ashes even after touching Mother Seeta. But against Mother Seeta’s chastity, Ravana died long ago. All that is left is for Rama to go and shoot an arrow.” Angada said, “Everything is known, is it not! Why tell Rama at all? Let us go directly and kill that Ravana and bring Mother Seeta and hand Her over to Rama.” Jambavantha said, “Wrong. You must not do that. One must do nothing independently but instead, do as the elders say. Let us tell all these matters to Rama and do as He says.”
Then they all started further. As they went, they found Madhuvana. A monkey by name Dadhimukha was protecting Madhuvana. The trees in the Madhuvana were full of bee hives. Wine from the flowers, wine from the fruits, all kinds of wine were stored in jars. All the monkeys went to Angada and said, “Let’s drink the wine from this Madhuvana.” On Angada agreeing, everyone went inside and drank honey squeezed out of the honeycombs. The wine in the jars there was drunk. They ate the fruits from the trees there. Intoxicated with all the honey they drank, they all sat down under the trees and some of them started singing. Some were punching the backs of the singers. Some were dancing. Some were greeting those whom they saw. Some were grinning with their teeth jetting out. Some were running here and there. Some were falling down from the trees. Some were crying without any reason.
