సుందరకాండ – 22
అప్పుడు సీతమ్మ “నన్ను 10 నెలల నుండి ఇంత బాధ పెట్టారు కనుక, నేను ఎలా ఏడుస్తున్నానో అలా ఈ లంక అంతా ఏడుస్తుంది. ప్రతి ఇంట ఏడుపులు వినపడతాయి” అని, ఈ లంకని పాలిస్తున్న రావణుడికి, ఇక్కడున్న వాళ్ళకి ధర్మమునందు పూనిక లేదు. అందుకనే నన్ను తీసుకొచ్చి ఇక్కడ పెట్టాడు. ఈ 2 నెలల గడువు తరువాత రావణుడి చేతిలో మరణించడం కన్నా ఇప్పుడే మరణించడం ఉత్తమం అనుకొని ‘కాలమే మృగ స్వరూపంలో వచ్చి నన్ను మొహపెట్టింది, నేను అల్ప భాగ్యం ఉన్నదానిని. అందుకనే ఆ మృగాన్ని చూసి మోహపడి రాముడిని వదిలేశాను. రాముడు పక్కన ఉంటే అన్నీ ఉండేవి, రాముడిని వదిలేసిన వెంటనే అన్నీ పోయాయి. రాముడి తరవాత పుట్టిన వాడిని వదిలాను, లక్ష్మణుడికి ముందు పుట్టినవాడు దూరం అయ్యాడు.
రామా! రావణుడు 10 నెలల నుండి తన ఐశ్వర్యాన్ని చూపిస్తూ నన్ను లోభాపెట్టాలని చూశాడు. కానీ నేను లొంగలేదు. నా భర్తే నాకు దైవం అని నమ్మాను. భూమిమీద పడుకున్నాను. ఉపవాసాలు చేశాను. ధర్మాన్ని పాటించాను. ఇన్ని చేస్తే నాకు రామానుగ్రహం కలుగుతుందని అనుకున్నాను. కానీ నువ్వు రాలేదు. నన్ను కరుణించలేదు. నా పాతివ్రత్యం విఫలమయ్యింది. కృతఘ్నుడైన వ్యక్తికి ఉపకారం చేస్తే ఆ ఉపకారము ఎలా మరువబడుతుందో, అలా నేను చేసిన ఉపాసన, నేను పాటించిన పాతివ్రత్యం అన్నీ కూడా నిష్ప్రయోజనం అయ్యాయి. ఇక్కడ పొడుచుకొని చనిపోదామంటే కత్తి ఇచ్చేవారు కూడా లేరు. విషం తాగి చనిపోదామంటే విషం ఇచ్చే వారు లేరు’ అనుకొని, తన కేశపాశములని (జుట్టుని) చెట్టు కొమ్మకి తాడులా బిగించి ఉరి వేసుకొని చనిపోవాలని నిర్ణయించుకుంది.
సీతమ్మ తన జుట్టుని ఆ శింశుపా వృక్షం యొక్క కొమ్మకి గట్టిగా బిగించి చనిపోదామని సిద్ధపడుతున్న తరుణంలో ఆమెకి శుభశకునములు కనపడ్డాయి. సరోవరంలో నీటి పైభాగమునందు అరవిసిరిన తెల్ల పద్మమునకు నీటి లోపలికి కాడ ఉంటుంది. ఆ నీటిలోకి ఉండిపోయిన కాడ పక్కకి ఒక చేప వచ్చి నిలబడింది. ఆ చేప అక్కడినుంచి వెళ్ళిపోయేముందు తన తోకని కదిపి వెళ్ళిపోయింది. అప్పుడా తోక వెళ్ళి ఆ పద్మము యొక్క కాడకి తగలడం వలన ఆ కాడ కదిలింది. కాడతో పాటు పైన ఉన్న పువ్వు కూడా కదిలింది. ఆ పువ్వు ఎలా కదిలిందో సీతమ్మ కన్ను కూడా ఆ సమయంలో అలా అందంగా అటూ ఇటూ కదిలింది.
అప్పటిదాకా పైన ఉండి సీతమ్మని చూస్తున్న హనుమంతుడు అనుకున్నాడు ‘ఈశ్వరానుగ్రహం చేత నాకు సీతమ్మ దర్శనం అయ్యింది. రావణుడిని కూడా చూశాను. రావణుడు సీతమ్మతో మాట్లాడిన మాటలు విన్నాను. త్రిజటా స్వప్న వృత్తాంతం విన్నాను. సీతమ్మని జగన్మాతగా తెలుసుకున్నాను. నేను సీతమ్మని చూశాను అన్న విషయాన్ని ఇప్పుడే వెళ్ళి రాముడికి చెప్పలేను. ఎందుకంటే అమ్మ ఇప్పుడు ఉరి పోసుకుంటోంది. నేను ఇప్పుడు సీతమ్మని ఓదార్చాలి. ఇప్పుడు నేను అమ్మని ఓదార్చకుండా, మాట్లాడకుండా వెళ్ళిపోతే, రేపుపొద్దున్న సీతమ్మ ఉరి పోసుకొని చనిపోయిందన్న విషయం రాముడికి తెలిస్తే ఆయన బాణముల చేత ఈ సమస్త బ్రహ్మాండములను క్షోభింప చేస్తాడు.
తను చాలా పండితుడని అనుకున్న వివేచనాశీలత లేని మంత్రి చేత, దూత చేత కార్యములు చెడిపోతాయి. ఇప్పుడు నేను ఏమి చెయ్యాలి? నేను గట్టిగా మాట్లాడితే చుట్టూ ఉన్న ఈ రాక్షస స్త్రీలు నా మాటలని విని, నా మీదకి వస్తారు. అప్పుడు నాకు వాళ్ళకి మధ్య యుద్ధం జరుగుతుంది. జయాపజయములను విధి నిర్ణయిస్తుంది. కానీ రాముడు లంకా పట్టణాన్ని చేరేలోపల నేను చేసిన అల్లరి చేత సీతమ్మని రావణుడు వేరొకచోట దాచవచ్చు.
Sundarakanda – 22
Then Mother Seeta said, “Since they tormented me so much for 10 months, this whole Lanka is crying like I am crying. Cries are heard from every household. Ravana, the ruler of this country, and the people here have no devotion to Dharma. That is why he brought and put me here. Instead of dying at the hands of Ravana at the end of 2 months, it is better to die now.” She further thought, “Kaala (destiny) came in the form of a deer and attracted me. I am an unlucky one. That is why I got enamoured by the deer and left Rama. If Rama were by my side, I had everything, and the moment I left Rama, all that disappeared. I left the one who was born after Rama, and the one born before Lakshmana went far away from me.”
“O Rama! Ravana has been trying to make me greedy by showing his wealth for the past 10 months. But I did not yield. I believed that my husband was my God. I slept on the ground. I fasted and practiced righteousness. I thought that by doing so, I would gain Rama’s grace. But you did not come. Nor did you grant mercy to me. My chastity failed. Just as the favour done to an ungrateful person is forgotten, similarly, all the worship I did and the chastity I maintained, went in vain. If I think of stabbing and killing myself, there is none to provide me a knife for doing that. If I think of consuming poison, there is none to give it to me.” Thinking thus, she decided to strangle herself by tying her hair to the branch of a tree, like a rope.
As Mother Seeta had her hair tied tightly to the branch of the Shimshupa tree and was preparing to die, she saw some auspicious omens. The white lotus floating on the water of the lake had its stalk inside the water. A fish came and stood by the side of the lotus stalk. Before it went away from there, it fluttered its tail. By the touch of the fish’s tail, the stalk moved. Along with the stalk, the flower above the water also moved. Just as the lotus moved, Mother Seeta’s eyes also moved to and fro beautifully.
Until then, Hanuman, who had been watching Mother Seeta, thought, “By the grace of God, Mother Seeta appeared to me. I also saw Ravana. I heard what Ravana said to Mother Seeta. I heard the dream story of Trijata. I came to know Mother Seeta as the mother of the world. I cannot go immediately and tell Rama that I saw Mother Seeta, because Mother is going to hang herself now. I have to comfort Mother Seeta now. If I go without consoling and talking to my Mother, and tomorrow, if Rama learns that Mother Seeta died, He will destroy the entire cosmos with His arrows.”
“All work will get spoilt by an irrational messenger, who thinks he is too learned. What should I do now? If I speak loudly, these demonesses around me will hear my words and fall on me. Then there will be war between us. Destiny will decide victory and defeat. But, by the time Rama reaches Lanka, Ravana may hide Mother Seeta somewhere else, due to my mischief.”
సుందరకాండ – 23
ఇప్పుడు నేను వానర బాషలో మాట్లాడితే సీతమ్మకి ఆ బాష అర్ధం కాదు. మనుష్య బాషలో మాట్లాడితే రాక్షసులు గుర్తు పడతారు. వానరరూపంలో ఉన్న నేను మనుష్య బాషలో మాట్లాడితే, ఇది ఖచ్చితంగా రావణ మాయే అని భయపడి సీతమ్మ ఇంకా గట్టిగా ఉరి బిగించుకుంటుంది. నా కారణంగా సీతమ్మ ప్రాణాలను విడిచిపెడితే ఆ పాపం నాకు అంటుకుంటుంది. ఇప్పుడు నేను ఏమి చెయ్యాలి? ఏమి మాట్లాడి సీతమ్మని ఓదార్చాలి?” అని అనుకుంటూ, ” సీతమ్మ ఉరి పోసుకోవడం మానేసి నా వైపు చూడాలంటే రామనామం ఒక్కటే మార్గము. సీతమ్మకి చాలా ఇష్టమైన రామ కథని చెబుతాను” అని అనుకొని హనుమంతుడు రామ కథ చెప్పడం ప్రారంభించాడు.
“పూర్వకాలం కోసల దేశాన్ని ఇక్ష్వాకు వంశంలో పుట్టిన దశరథ మహారాజు పరిపాలించేవాడు. విపరీతమైన ఐశ్వర్యాన్ని సంపాదించివాడు, ఇంద్రుడితో సమానమైనవాడు, ఇతరుల ధర్మాన్ని రక్షించే స్వభావం ఉన్నవాడైన దశరథుడు పుత్రకామేష్టి యాగం చేస్తే పెద్ద కుమారుడిగా రాముడు జన్మించాడు. ఆ దశరథుడు చేసిన ప్రతిజ్ఞ నిలబడేటట్టు చెయ్యడం కోసమని, ఆయనని సత్యవాక్యమునందు నిలపడం కోసమని 14 సంవత్సరములు అరణ్యవాసం చెయ్యడానికి రాముడు వెళ్ళాడు. రాముడిని విడిచిపెట్టి ఉండలేక ఆయనని నిరంతరము అనుగమించేటటువంటి స్వభావము కలిగిన తమ్ముడు లక్ష్మణుడు రాముడి వెనకాల వెళ్ళాడు. పతి సేవ తప్ప వేరొకటి నాకు అవసరంలేదు అనే స్వభావం ఉన్న భార్య సీతమ్మ రాముడి వెనకాల వెళ్ళింది. అలా రాముడు లక్ష్మణుడితో, సీతమ్మతో దండకారణ్యంలో ఉండగా ఒకనాడు జనస్థానంలో 14,000 మంది రాక్షసులు వచ్చి అక్కడి మునుల తపస్సులను భగ్నం చేస్తూ ఉంటే వారందరినీ సంహరించాడు. దానికి కినుక చెందిన పదితలల రావణుడు మాయ జింకని ప్రవేశపెట్టి రామలక్ష్మణులు లేని సమయంలో సీతమ్మని అపహరించాడు. తదనంతరం సీతమ్మని అన్వేషిస్తూ వెళ్ళిన రామచంద్రమూర్తి సుగ్రీవుడితో స్నేహం చేసి, వాలిని సంహరించి సుగ్రీవుడికి పట్టాభిషేకం చేశాడు. ఆనాడు సీతాన్వేషణ కోసం సుగ్రీవుడి చేత అన్ని దిక్కులకీ వానరములు పంపబడ్డాయి. దక్షిణ దిక్కుకి వచ్చిన వానరములలో ఒకడినైన హనుమ అనే పేరుగల నేను 100 యోజనముల సముద్రాన్ని దాటాను. సీతమ్మ ఎలాంటి కాంతితో, ఎలాంటి నగలతో, ఎలాంటి వస్త్రంతో ఉంటుందని రాముడు నాకు చెప్పాడో, అలాంటి సీతమ్మని ఈ శింశుపా వృక్షం మీదనుంచి ఇక్కడే కిందకి చూసి నేను ధన్యుడనయ్యాను” అని చెప్పి ఆగిపోయాడు.
ఇంతవరకూ వినపడని రామనామం ఒక్కసారి వినపడేసరికి సీతమ్మ అప్రయత్నంగా తన మెడకి చుట్టుకున్న జుట్టుని విప్పేసింది. ఆ కథని విన్న ఆనందంలో పరమ సంతోషంగా సీతమ్మ శింశుపా వృక్షం వైపు చూసింది. సీతమ్మకు మాత్రమే వినపడేటట్టుగా, కాళ్ళతో కొమ్మని పట్టుకొని, చేతులతో ఆకులని పక్కకి తొలగించి, తెల్లటి వస్త్రములను ధరించినవాడై, పింగళ వర్ణంతో, పచ్చటి నేత్రాలతో, పగడాల మూతిలాంటి మూతితో రామ కథ చెబుతున్న సుగ్రీవుడి సచివుడైన హనుమంతుడు సీతమ్మకి దగ్గరగా కనబడ్డాడు. అలా ఉన్న హనుమని చూడగానే సీతమ్మ స్పృహ కోల్పోయి నేలమీద పడిపోయింది.

“Now if I speak in monkey language, Mother Seeta does not understand that language. If I speak in human language, the demons will recognize it. Being in monkey form, if I speak in human language, Mother Seeta will fear that it is surely Ravana’s illusion and will tighten the noose around Her neck. If Mother Seeta dies because of me, that sin will cling to me. What should I do now? What can I say to comfort Mother Seeta? ” he thought. He further said to himself, “Chanting Rama’s Name is the only way to make Mother Seeta to stop trying to hang Herself, and instead, look at me. I will tell Mother Seeta’s favourite story of Rama.” Hanuman then began to tell the story of Rama.
“Once upon a time, Dasharatha Maharaja, who was born in the Ikshwaku dynasty, ruled the ancient Kosala kingdom. He earned a lot of wealth and fame. As one who had become equal to Indra (King of Gods), and one who took interest in protecting others’ Dharma (righteousness), when Dasharatha performed the Putrakaameshthi sacrifice, Rama was born as his eldest son. In to make him honour his promise, and make him stand by his word, Rama set out to the forest for 14 years. Lakshmana, the younger brother, who was so inclined to follow Rama that he could not leave him, went after Rama. Seeta, who thought that she did not require anything except serving Her husband, followed him to the forest. In this way, when Rama, accompanied by Seeta and Lakshmana, was in the Dandakaranya forest, and one day 14000 demons came and destroyed the Yajnyas (holy sacrifices) of the Sages living there, Rama killed them. Angered by this, the ten-headed introduced the illusive deer and abducted Mother Seeta in the absence of Rama and Lakshmana. Did. Later on Rama and Lakshmana set out in search of Mother Seeta, met and befriended the monkey Sugreeva, killed his brother Vaali and crowned Sugreeva as King. On that day, monkeys were sent in all directions by Sugreeva to search for Mother Seeta. Being one of the monkeys who headed South, myself, named Hanuman, crossed the sea of 100 yojanas. As Lord Rama told me about her lustre , the kind of jewellery she would be wearing, the kind of cloth Mother Seeta would be wearing, accordingly, I was blessed to see such a Mother Seeta, looking down from this Shimshupa tree.” Saying this, He suddenly stopped.
Mother Seeta effortlessly untied the hair wrapped around her neck once she heard the hitherto unheard Ramanaama. Mother Seeta looked at the Shimshupa tree with great joy at hearing the story. Heard only by Mother Seeta, Hanuman, the minister of Sugriva, was seen approaching Mother Seeta, holding a branch with his legs, removing the leaves with his hands, and dressed in white, with a pingala hue, green eyes, and a coral-like muzzle, telling the story of Rama. Mother Seeta lost consciousness and fell to the ground when she saw Hanuman.
