సుందరకాండ – 18
రావణుడి మాటలను విన్న సీతమ్మ శుద్ధమైన నవ్వు నవ్వి, ఒక గడ్డిపరకని తీసుకొని, దానిని తనకూ రావణునకూ మధ్యలో పెట్టి “రావణా! నీ మనస్సు నీవారి యందు పెట్టుకో. నీకు అనేకమంది భార్యలు ఉన్నారు. వాళ్ళతో సుఖంగా ఉండు. పరాయి వాళ్ళ భార్యల గురించి ఆశపడకు. ఒంట్లో ఓపిక ఉంటే ఎలాగన్నా బతకవచ్చు. కానీ చనిపోవడం నీ చేతులలో లేదు. నువ్వు సుఖంగా బతకాలన్నా, చనిపోవాలన్నా నీకు రామానుగ్రహం కావాలి. ఒంట్లో ఓపిక ఉందని పాపం చేస్తున్నావు. కానీ ఆ పాపాన్ని అనుభవించవలసిననాడు బాధపడతావు. నన్ను తీసుకెళ్ళి రాముడికి అప్పగించి సంతోషంగా జీవించు. శరణు అన్నవాడిని రాముడు ఏమీ చెయ్యడు. ‘నేను సీతని తీసుకొచ్చాను’ అంటావేమిటి? నీ జీవితంలో నువ్వు నన్ను తీసుకురాలేవు. సూర్యుడి నుంచి సుర్యుడి కాంతిని వేరు చేసి తేగలవా? వజ్రం నుంచి వజ్రం యొక్క ప్రభని వేరు చేసి తేగలవా? పువ్వు నుంచి పువ్వు యొక్క వాసనని వేరు చేసి తేగలవా? ఇవన్నీ ఎలా తీసుకురాలేవో అలా రాముడి నుండి నన్ను తీసుకురాలేవు. మరి నేను ఇక్కడికి ఎందుకు వచ్చాను అని అంటావేమో, ఇదంతా నిన్ను చంపడానికి బ్రహ్మగారు వేసిన ప్రాతిపదిక.
ఒక పతివ్రత అయిన స్త్రీని అపహరించి చెయ్యరాని పాపం చేశావు. ఇక నీ పాపం ఊరికే పోదు. దీనికి ఒకటే మార్గం, నన్ను తీసుకెళ్ళి రాముడికి అప్పగించు, బతికిపోతావు. నేను నిన్ను ఇప్పుడే నా తపఃశక్తి చేత బూడిద చెయ్యగలను. కానీ నన్ను రాముడు వచ్చి రక్షిస్తాడన్న కారణం చేత ఆగిపోయాను. అసలు ఈ ఊరిలో ధర్మం అనేది చెప్పేవారు లేరా? ఒకవేళ ఎవరన్నా చెప్పినా నువ్వు వినవా? ఒకవేళ విన్నా దానిని ఆచరించవా?” అని ప్రశ్నించింది.
ఆ మాటలు విన్న రావణుడికి ఆగ్రహం వచ్చి “ఏ స్త్రీయందు విశేషమైన కామం ఉంటుందో ఆ స్త్రీయందు ఉపేక్షించే స్వభావం కూడా ఉంటుంది. నన్ను చూసి ఇంతమంది స్త్రీలు కామించి వెంటపడ్డారు. నీకు ఐశ్వర్యం ఇస్తాను. సింహాసనం మీద కుర్చోపెడతాను. నా పాన్పు చేరు అంటే ఇంత అమర్యాదగా మాట్లాడుతున్నావు. నీకు నా గొప్పతనం ఏమిటో తెలియడం లేదు” అని చెప్పి, అక్కడున్న రాక్షస స్త్రీలను పిలిచి “ఈమె యందు సామమును, దానమును, బేధమును ప్రయోగించండి అని నేకు మీకు చెప్పాను. కానీ ఈమె లొంగలేదు. 10 నెలల సమయం అయిపోయింది. ఇంకా 2 నెలల సమయం మాత్రమే ఉంది. ఆ సమయంలో సీత నా పాన్పు తనంతట తాను చేరితే సరి, లేకపోతే మీరు సీతని దండించండి” అన్నాడు.
(ఇంట్లో తనని ప్రేమించి, అనుగమించే భార్య ఉన్నాకూడా, ఆ భార్యయందు మనస్సు ఉంచకుండా పరస్త్రీయందు మనస్సు ఉంచుకొని, పరస్త్రితో సంగమించిన పురుషుడికి ఆ దోషం పోవాలంటే, 6 నెలలపాటు తిరిగిన వీధి తిరగకుండా, మిట్టమధ్యానం వేళ, చీకటి పడ్డాక, పాత్ర పట్టుకొని ఇళ్ళ ముందుకి వెళ్ళి ‘నాయందు మనసున్న, ఆరోగ్యవంతురాలైన భార్య ఇంట్లో ఉండగా – వేరొక స్త్రీతో సంగమించిన మహాపాతకుడిని నేను. ఇప్పుడు ఆ పాపం నుండి విముక్తుడిని కావాలని కోరుకుంటున్నాను. అందుకని మీ చేతితో ఇంత అన్నం తీసుకొచ్చి పడెయ్యండమ్మా’ అని ముష్టి ఎత్తుకున్న అన్నం తింటే వాడి పాపం పోతుంది. ఇది పురుషులకీ వర్తిస్తుంది, స్త్రీలకీ వర్తిస్తుంది.)
Sundarakanda – 18
Mother Seeta, hearing Ravana’s words, smiled purely, took a straw, and keeping it between herself and Ravana, said, “Ravana! Keep your mind focussed on your people. You have many wives. Be comfortable with them. Do not desire for the wives of strangers. If you have patience within yourself, you can live in any way. But death is not in your hands. You need Rama’s grace to live comfortably or die. Thinking that you have patience in your body, you are committing sin. But you will suffer, the day you will have to experience the fruits of your sin. Take me back to Rama and live comfortably. Rama will not do anything to one who seeks refuge in Him. Why do you say, ‘I brought Seeta ?’ You will never be able to bring me in your entire lifetime. Can you separate the light of the sun from the sun and bring it? Can you separate the brilliance of a diamond from the diamond and bring it? Can you separate the scent of a flower from the flower and bring it? Just like you cannot bring all these, you cannot bring me from Rama. Then you may ask me as to why did I come here. All this is the plan laid by Brahma to kill you.”
“You have committed an uncommittable sin by kidnapping a chaste woman. Your sin will not go away simply. The only way for this is to take me and hand me over to Rama. Then you will survive. I can burn you to ashes right now with energy of my penance. But I stopped because Rama would come and save me. Is there no one in this town who can talk about Dharma (righteousness)? In case anyone even does it, will you not listen to it? In case you listen to it, will you not practise it?”
When Ravana heard these words, he became angry and said, “Any woman who has a special lust also has a tendency to crave for it. These women have lusted after me. I shall give you wealth. I shall seat you on the throne. Just because I am asking you to come to me, you are talking so rudely. You are not realizing what my greatness is.” Calling out to the demon women there, he said, “I told you to use Sama(peaceful), Daana(enticing) and Bheda (exploiting) methods on her. But she did not give up. 10 months have passed. There are only 2 months left. If Seeta comes to me of her own accord, fine, otherwise punish Seeta.”
(Even if there is a wife who loves and follows him in the house, without keeping his mind on that wife, if a person keeps his mind on an outside woman and has physical relationship with that outside woman, if he has to get rid of the bad effects of that, he has to avoid roads which he has already traversed, for 6 months, and going with a vessel before peak noon and after darkness has set in, stand in front of houses and say, “In spite of having a healthy wife at home, who has kept her mind on me, I am a great sinner who had had physical relationship with another woman. Now I wish to get rid of this sin, so kindly put a handful of cooked rice”, and having thus begged with raised hands, if he eats the rice, he will be absolved of his sin. This applies to men as well as women who have committed adultery.)
సుందరకాండ – 19
అప్పుడు రావణుడి భార్య అయిన ధాన్యమాలిని రావణుడిని గట్టిగా కౌగలించుకొని “నీయందు మనస్సున్న స్త్రీతో భోగిస్తే అది ఆనందము. నీయందు మనస్సులేని స్త్రీతో ఎందుకు ఈ భోగము. మనము క్రీడిద్దాము పద” అనేసరికి ఆ రావణుడు నవ్వుకుంటూ తన భార్యలతో వెనక్కి వెళ్ళిపోయాడు.
అప్పుడు అక్కడున్న వికృత రూపములు కలిగిన రాక్షస స్త్రీలు సీతమ్మ చుట్టూ చేరి “సీతా! దేనికైనా ఇంత అతి పనికిరాదు. రావణుడు అంటే సామాన్యుడు కాదు. బ్రహ్మ కుమారులలో నాలుగో ప్రజాపతి అయిన పులస్త్యబ్రహ్మ యొక్క కుమారుడైన విశ్రవసోబ్రహ్మ యొక్క కుమారుడు ఈ రావణబ్రహ్మ. సాక్షాత్తు బ్రహ్మగారికి మునిమనవడు. లోకంలో అందరినీ జయించాడు. బ్రహ్మగారిని గూర్చి తపస్సు చేశాడు. ఎన్నో గొప్ప వరములను పొందాడు. అలాంటి రావణుడితో హాయిగా భోగం అనుభవించకుండా ఏమిటి ఈ మూర్ఖత్వం? పోనిలే మెల్లగా మనస్సు మార్చుకుంటావు అని ఇంతకాలం చూశాము. కానీ మనస్సు మార్చుకోకుండా ఇలా ఉంటావేంటి? ఎంత చెప్పాలి నీకు?” అని గద్దించారు. అప్పుడు సీతమ్మ అన్నది “ఐశ్వర్యం ఉంటే భర్తగా చూడడం, రాజ్యం ఉంటే భర్తగా చూడడం, ఒంట్లో ఓపిక ఉంటే భర్తగా చూడడం నాకు తెలియదు. ఆయన దీనుడు కావచ్చు. రాజ్యహీనుడు కావచ్చు. కానీ నా భర్త నాకు గురువు, సమస్తం. సూర్యుడి భార్య అయిన సువర్చల సూర్యుడిని ఎలా అనుగమిస్తుందో, వశిష్ఠుడిని అరుంధతి ఎలా అనుగమిస్తుందో, శచీదేవి ఇంద్రుడిని ఎలా అనుగమిస్తుందో, రోహిణి చంద్రుడిని ఎలా అనుగమిస్తుందో, లోపాముద్ర అగస్త్యుడిని ఎలా అనుగమిస్తుందో, సుకన్య చ్యవన మహర్షిని ఎలా అనుగమిస్తుందో, సావిత్రి సత్యవంతుడిని ఎలా అనుగమిస్తుందో, శ్రీమతి కపిలుడిని ఎలా అనుగమిస్తుందో నేను కూడా అలా రాముడిని అనువర్తిస్తాను. మీరు నన్ను చంపి, నా శరీరాన్ని ముక్కలు చేసి తినెయ్యండి. నేను మాత్రం రాముడిని తప్ప వేరొకడిని కన్నెత్తి కూడా చూడను. రావణుడిని నా ఎడమ కాలితో కూడా ముట్టుకోను. మీరు నాకు ఇలాంటి మాటలు చెప్పకూడదు, నేను వినకూడదు” అన్నది.

Then Ravana’s wife Dhaanyamalini hugged Ravana tightly and said, “If you have physical relationship with a woman who has her mind with you, it is happiness. Why this pleasure with a woman who has no mind with you. Let us go and play.” On hearing this, Ravana laughingly walked back with his wives.
Then the unruly demonesses, with crooked teeth, gathered around Mother Seeta and said, “Seeta! For whatsoever, this extreme behaviour will not help. Ravana is not a common person. This Ravana Brahma is the son of Vishrawaso Brahma, whose father is Pulastya Brahma, the son of the fourth Prajapati among Brahma’s sons. Thus, he is the very great grandson of Lord Brahma. He has conquered everyone in this world. He performed penance on Lord Brahma. He has received many great boons. What is this stupidity of not having a comfortable time with such a Ravana? We have seen so far whether you would change your mind. But why do your still remain thus, without changing your mind? How many times should we tell you?” they shouted. Then Mother Seeta said, “I do not know how to see a wealthy person as husband, one having a kingdom as husband, or seeing one having physical patience as husband. He may be poor. He may be stateless. But my husband is my teacher, my everything. The way Surya’s wife Suvarchala follows her husband Surya (sun), Shachidevi follows Indra, Rohini follows Chandra (moon), Lopaamudra follows Agastya, Sukanya follows Chyavana Maharshi, Savitri follows Satyavaan, and Shreemathi follows Sage Kapila, I shall follow Rama. You may kill me and cut my body to pieces and eat me. But I shall not look up and see anyone except Rama. I shall not touch Ravana even with my left foot. You should not tell such things to me, nor should I hear them.” She said.
